Of all architectural forms, houses are the most culturally sensitive to their times, so what could we expect to see in a '21st Century House'? What could distinguish these houses from those that preceded them?
An interest in the new, and especially in new forms of housing, was an ongoing preoccupation of loth Century Western architecture. Histories of this period revolve around projections for the 'future house', often directed by utopian conviction in the potential for architects to reform peoples' lives. And the instrument for this reformation was to be technology and the possibilities that would ensue. From the days of the Bauhaus, when Walter Gropius and his fellow Bauhauslers proposed the industry-produced house 'Am Horn', the belief in what technology could deliver has been a powerful article of faith. Architectural form, and the design of interiors, accordingly developed in response to assumptions about technological change, often anticipating and projecting 'future house' types and forms...
