The Context of the Journey: Between August 1861 and May 1862 right in the midst of the American Civil War Anthony Trollope traveled extensively across the United States and Canada. His primary objective was to observe firsthand the workings of a society in crisis and to write a detailed account. A Familiar Response: The journey also served as an attempt at historical "redress." Thirty years earlier, his mother, Frances Trollope, had written a highly critical and satirical book about American customs (*Domestic Manners of the Americans*) that sparked great indignation in the U.S. Anthony sought to adopt a much fairer, more empathetic, and analytical stance.
